Cool Words - Glossary
Commerce – buying and selling of goods for money
Dredging – removing the earth from the ocean floor by using a series of buckets or a scoop
Exclusive Economic Zone – the coastline of the United States from 3 miles to 200 miles from shore
Lead line – a rope marked with numbers, once used to gather information about water depths
LIDAR – a system that uses light waves to measure water depths in clear water
Nautical chart – a kind of map that gives boaters information to find their way around
Navigation – finding your way from one place to another
Sonar – a system that uses sound waves to “see” in the water
Towfish – the tool used to take side scan sonar measurements
